Malala Fund

I worked at Malala Fund from July 2015 — August 2021, rising through the ranks of the communications department from Digital Manager to Director of Creative and Communications. I oversaw the development of advocacy, digital fundraising and marketing campaigns and the organization’s rebrand.

Malala Fund

Rebrand

Working with Airbnb and designer Jonathan Haring, I led the redesign of Malala Fund’s visual identity to better represent the organization’s approach to advancing girls’ education throughout the world. In 2015, the nonprofit was rapidly expanding its global footprint and launching a support network for education advocates. The new logo would need to move away from Malala as an individual and instead evoke a sense of connectivity. The original branding was too childish — handwritten fonts, bright colors. A new brand would need to convey gravitas, universality and celebrate a shared vision for universal learning.

Icons + Patterns

I sought to create an icon set using an established grid that could generate millions of potential forms — to represent the potential of millions of girls who could accomplish their dreams if they had access to education.

When repeated, the icons would create patterns were used to establish identities for countries where Malala Fund worked. The icons could be used as individual accents, but together they formed something greater than their parts.

Website redesign

A new visual identity also means a new website. I spearheaded the redesign and expansion of Malala Fund’s website with the agency Language Department. Together we worked to restructure the sites content and improve its UX/UI — adding 75 new pages to accommodate profiles of individual grantees and their work and a newsroom dedicated to highlighting research and publications.

SITE PAGES

  • Homepage

    AN INFORMATIVE WELCOME

When users arrive at malala.org, they should easily make the connection between the Nobel laureate’s story and the organization’s mission.

  • Education Champion Network

    EXPLAINING OUR WORK

This page lays out the innovative structure of Malala Fund’s grantmaking and theory of change for prospective donors or partners.

  • Grantee Profiles

    DIVING DEEPER

Explore each education champion’s story through video, photos and text. A codification system identifies country and approach.

Campaigns

I was the Creative Director for all of Malala Fund’s public-facing campaigns and partnerships to build global awareness for the girls’ education.

  • I developed the concept and content for this recurring report for donors and partners to learn about the impact of their investments and encourage them to further support Malala Fund’s work.

  • In 2020, Malala Fund launched a comprehensive, multi-country research project to understand the impact of the global pandemic on girls’ secondary education. I oversaw the development of the campaign’s various activations, including a microsite with data visualization, design of five research reports and infographics to educate readers and influence government decisions on school reopenings and distance learning.
